Speed camera bosses in Devon are currently seeking legal advice after claims that some drivers were wrongly convicted in an area covered by ambigous speed limit signs.
The case involves a mobile site at an area between Teignmouth and Dawlish, which previously had older speed limit signs. These signs used a flat top on the 3 character on the sign, which some drivers argued could easily be confused with a 5. Local authorities have now replaced the signs, effectively vindicating the driver's claims.
This case isn't the first time Devon and Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership's practices have come into question. Last month, the Partnership were forced to remove points from driver's licences, and give refunds for fines totalling more than £100,000 after a court threw out cases against four drivers who had contested cases due to speed limit signs which were spaced too far apart.
